“…don’t worry too much, because teachers don’t typically teach PE anymore…”
Welcome to episode 121 of The PE Umbrella Podcast, the only Primary PE podcast in the world, as we talk ALL things Physical Education.
In this episode, I am super excited to welcome Victoria Randall to really unpick the Primary PE and Sport Premium report and the recommendations that were put forward. As a key stakeholder in the writing and publishing of the report, as well as a background on the frontline and teaching PE herself, Victoria brings a well balanced and thoughtful view to the table regarding all points that are raised.
To date, there has been roughly £1.2bn thrown at Primary Sport and PE over roughly 6 years, so it only seems fitting that this report has been published and even more so that we discuss the effectiveness and impact on PE during that period. Is it obvious when stepping into any given primary school in the country today that they have had 6 years of spending on their PE? Probably not. I am hesitant to tarnish everybody with the same brush because of course that is not the case everywhere. The fact is that money was given with no obviously clear guidance on how to maximise the benefit it could bring. Some headteachers and PE co-ordinators ran with it and have made great strides while others were left in the dust and in some cases doing nothing at all because they didn’t know where to even begin.
To that end, this interview/discussion seeks to bring opinions and thoughts to the table with regards to what has happened, if the key recommendations are valid and where, as a subject, we are/need to be heading to truly deliver outstanding PE across the country.
Some key points covered include:
- Teacher Training
- The use of sports coaches in schools
- Core status as a subject
- What do we mean by ‘specialist’ and is this dangerous?
I hope, above all else, that this episode sparks discussion from all angles regarding the report and I’d love the professional dialogue to continue on twitter, so tweet me @thepeumbrella and let’s move things forward. So what are you waiting for? Come and join us for a cracking episode Under the PE Umbrella!
