Joining me Under the Umbrella this week is sports journalist, broadcaster and presenter Jacqui Oatley.
At a time when it seemed to go well against the grain, Jacqui was the first-ever female commentator on BBC’s Match of the Day and has since smashed down any perceived barriers on her way to becoming one of the most accomplished broadcasters, presenters and journalists in the country. With an everlasting thirst for sport, her social media feed provides a reasoned, balanced and thought-provoking read on all sporting issues that are well worth following for any sports fan! Her rise into being a top-level presenter is just one of the talking points of this episode…
Jacqui has recently expressed constructive concerns over social media regarding physical activity levels and PE in primary schools since returning after the Summer break. Like many others, I was delighted to see such a powerful voice advocating for my beloved subject, and one that holds just as much passion for it as what I do. She has been an excellent sounding board for many practitioners across the country to share their personal views (both positive & negative) surrounding the current state of affairs in PE.
While there are many fantastic things going on, unsurprisingly, Jacqui was shocked at some of the stories she was hearing from people on the ground level in schools and was able to compile these scenarios before meeting and feeding back her concerns to Edward Timpson MP. Thankfully, this is another area we were able to dive into and unpick during the show.
Not only that, but we take a trip down memory lane to explore Jacqui’s own memories of PE from her days at school to see how, if at all they have helped shape her love for the subject.
It’s simply wonderful to have a high profile advocate of PE, PA and SS such as Jacqui and I found myself feeling very privileged and somewhat nervous sitting down and chatting with her. It didn’t take long for my nerves to ease though and we were soon jumping down many rabbit holes during our discussion about all things PE!
