“Always be happy with where you are, but always strive to be better!”
Hello Hello Hello and welcome once more to you, The PE Umbrella Community, to the ONLY Primary and Elementary PE Podcast!
In this incredible interview episode, I chat with Primary PE co-ordinator Ryan Forwood. In addition to his daily teaching duties, Ryan regularly shares excellent content on twitter (@ryanforwoodpe) and was the co-author of an article named ‘Sport Education in the Primary Games Curriculum’ alongside Jim Lavin. We delve into his incredible knowledge and experiences to chat ALL things Primary PE, including the PE Funding, implementing a Sport Education unit and which activities are a MUST HAVE for your Primary PE classroom. You will absolutely take away actionable steps to use in YOUR school this week!
It was a genuine pleasure to chat with Ryan, who has a real passion and drive for improving the quality of Physical Education in the area in which he works. I have followed him on social media for over a year now and he has been a huge help to myself during that time, sharing advice and excellent resources freely that have had a positive impact on my own teaching. Ryan covers a whole host of topics during this interview and suggests a creative use of the PE budget to introduce a new, inclusive sport in which all children start from a level playing field. At the moment he is currently introducing VX and shares examples of other schools spending the budget creatively on a school mini bus to help attend local fixtures! If you want a whole host of take aways, including behaviour management advice, spending your PE budget, useful warm ups and even a heads up on a Sport Education model (including a free bonus) then come and join me ‘Under the Umbrella’ by clicking play right here, or subscribe to the PE Umbrella on iTunes to listen at your own leisure whenever you choose.
What I Learned: Primary PE Assessment is currently up in the air. But let’s get one thing clear. It is not all about the Physical! We MUST acknowledge ALL FOUR domains of learning to see the bigger picture:
For those of you who follow me closely, you will be probably thinking right now (but your assessment web only focuses on the physical) and you would be 100% correct. However, this for me is a ‘way of assessing visually’ as opposed to a finished article and a complete package. I am always learning and developing my craft and seeing how I can best adjust to an ever changing education landscape. It would be foolish of myself or any other practitioner to assess a child purely based on the physical domain as they may be particularly strong at communicating ideas and feedback, able to think logically about situations and apply it, and possibly even attend an activity outside of school (such as climbing) that I am unaware of. In this instance, although they may not be physically the strongest, they are certainly more than competent in the remaining three domains. For me, it is all about an open mind, as coming from a coaching background I instinctively look for performance. I am slowly coming to terms as a PE teacher that I need to look past this, especially if we are to develop children to love and be engaged in sport throughout their lives. I mean let’s face it, not everybody can be a professional sports star, I tried it once myself…
