“Combining the physical and cognitive together really enables the children to flourish”

This week for Episode 28, I chat with trainee teacher Rob Shaw. A Primary Education student who specialises in PE, Rob is currently in his second year hoping to become a PE co-ordinator. In addition to this, he is a voting member for the International Physical Literacy Association (IPLA) and runs his own blog at https//www.physical-literacy.blogspot.co.uk. We delve into his early experiences of the Primary PE landscape to chat ALL things Primary PE and share more actionable activities that you can take away and use in YOUR school this week!
I found it particularly refreshing chatting with Rob, as relatively new to teaching, he was able to share his viewpoint on the current state of Primary PE looking in, which I find is sometimes a more honest appraisal. I have followed Rob on social media for a number of months now and he is clearly passionate and knowledgable when it comes to physical education, with some particularly excellent blog posts that are well worth a read for practitioners new and old! What I Learned: When discussing Outstanding aspects of Teaching PE, Rob mentioned the term ‘Critical Eye’. This really struck a chord with myself for two reasons. Firstly because I believe it is essential and secondly because I don’t think it is done often enough. So what is a ‘critical eye’? A critical eye entails taking a step back to observe a child perform a skill or task and then following up with constructive feedback on how to improve along with some questioning that gets the children thinking about what they have performed. However, I can completely understand the hesitancy of many teachers to want to do this in a Primary setting, as having a critical eye would require the teacher themselves to have at least ‘good’ knowledge of the task at hand. As PE is a much overlooked area on Primary training courses we have many teachers who are outstanding practitioners but become nervous or even feel inadequate when it comes to teaching PE. If we are to develop thoughtful learners who care about their physical education journey, we need to be guiding them through regular feedback. If we are too caught up in the moment teaching the lesson and worrying about missing something that we planned, then in my opinion, we are missing the whole point. So the next time you are teaching PE, do a little research on the unit you are to teach beforehand to have at least ‘some’ level of knowledge. Then occasionally take a step back, and use your own critical eye to assess progress and guide your children on the path to developing in their own Physical Education journey.
