Welcome to episode 159 of The PE Umbrella podcast, the ONLY Primary PE Podcast in the world!
Joining me Under the Umbrella this week for her second appearance on the show is PE teacher Rachel Ford. You can catch her first appearance on the show back in episode 137 as we dived into ALL things Primary PE, including her favourite warm-up, top tips and much more.
During this episode, I had the pleasure of catching up on everything that Rachel has been doing since our first chat. Something that has taken off for her is the launch of her website/blog Once Upon a PE Lesson. Rachel is a big advocate of storytelling and themes as a hook in teaching PE, particularly in KS1 and EYFS. The first part of our conversation today centres around just this, digging into some of Rachels favourite themes and games as well as digging into WHY themes are so successful for her.
As we are still navigating our way through the Covid-19 pandemic and left wondering what teaching will look like on our return, Rachel has recently returned to face-to-face teaching after a 3-month lockdown, and this gave us an opportunity to chat about how PE looks with added ‘social distancing’ rules. Rachel shares what has changed, what has surprised her and what she recommends as ideal units to start with upon your return too. Not only that, but Rachel also answers…
- – What currently excites you about PE?
- – What misconceptions of Primary PE would you banish to room 101 given the chance?
As always, you can be certain that we venture off down many tangents, including more on cognitive biases (I’ve been big on this recently) so I can promise you there are knowledge bombs to be taken away!
So what are you waiting for? Come on over and join us Under the PE Umbrella.
