“They thrive in the challenge to master the steps”
“The children instinctively began to give each other feedback and advice, willing each other on to succeed”
Hello and welcome back to The PE Umbrella!
This week I bring you another resource that I’m certain you will get much enjoyment and use from. Earlier in the week, I posed a question on social media ‘What one thing should ALL primary PE cupboards have in them?’ and aside from the essentials (cones, bibs, variety of balls), these are the one thing I personally, feel all schools should have but sadly don’t. ‘What are they?’ I hear you ask…
I have been a fan of them for many years since my coaching days in the United States, where they take Speed, Agility and Quickness (SAQ) training very seriously. Therefore, I challenged myself this week to introduce the concept of speed ladders to as many of the classes that I was teaching as possible in the form of a warm up. Of course, many schools didn’t have speed ladders, in which case, I used cones as an alternative. It would be an understatement to say that they were a success, easily summarised by the two words ‘ENGAGING’ and ‘CHALLENGING’ and on this episode of The PE Umbrella podcast I explain why!
As a base for you to begin, I have compiled my favourite 8 speed ladder exercises in this FREE DOWNLOADABLE PDF. They range from easy to hard and provide suitable challenge for even the most able children of primary/elementary school age. Of course there are many more variations, but these are the ones I have found work for me.
Don’t forget to click the button below to grab your FREE PDF copy of the ‘8 Speed Ladder Exercises’ and take it into school with you!
So, listen to this weeks episode of The PE Umbrella at your own leisure to hear all about this incredible piece of equipment and how YOU can start using the exercises this week, whether you have speed ladders or not!
If you are inspired, then you can pick up speed ladders for very cheap on Amazon, or in a local sports store. For extra motivation and some truly brilliant advanced footwork drills, check out the video below!
Be sure to subscribe to The PE Umbrella on iTunes or Stitcher radio by following the links above or below. It would be amazing if you could rate and review the show there and give me your feedback. I hope that you find some use in this episode and the accompanying PDF and see for yourself just how great speed, agility and quickness exercises can be. Please get in touch if you use it yourself and let me know how it goes if you take the plunge and try it! Have a fantastic week and I’ll catch you next time ‘Under the Umbrella’.
