“We do so much as athletes, coaches or PE teachers to discipline, for the body, for the skills, but what are we doing do discipline our minds?”
Welcome to episode 96 of The PE Umbrella Podcast, the only primary and elementary PE podcast in the world, for what I’m sure you will find to be an absolute smasher of an episode!
Today, I am joined Under the Umbrella by non other than Neila Steele, a real rockstar of an educator with a particular passion for mindfulness. I have followed Neila ever since interviewing her husband Andy Vasily (check out episode 59 with him here) and just loved the whole vibe of everything she was putting out with her content ever since. When the opportunity came to have her on the show, it was simply a no brainer. A couple of years ago, I started my own mindfulness habit by getting into the app ‘headspace’ and then ‘calm’, two meditation apps that I added into my morning routine. It was a journey that I had great pleasure in following, but, as with habits, I missed a couple of sessions and I hold my hands up to admit that the wheels fell off! After talking to Neila, you better believe that I am jumping back on again!
As you can see from this page, there are no time stamps for this episode. I’d hate for you to skip parts and miss anything as it’s all a great listen. This episode also didn’t run like a traditional Q&A episode, but more like a conversation between two individuals who share a passion for education and well being, not just for ourselves, but the students we teach. During the episode itself, we talk about how Neila really rehearses what she preaches and brings mindfulness into her daily life, exploring the impact it has had on her. She explains how we too, can be more mindful on a day to day basis, being present for everybody we meet.
We then delve into the power of visualisation, with Neila sharing a personal story close to her heart before jumping into how it could be used more in an education setting to promote a growth mindset among our students.
It really was a pleasure talking to Neila on this episode and I hope you too can feel the passion we both have when you listen! I’d love for you to share any feedback you have with me on Twitter @ryansporting or by email, email@example.com.
