“Maybe you need to change what you’re doing instead of changing the child’s behaviour…”
Welcome to The PE Umbrella Podcast episode 48, and as always, thank you for giving up your time to join me on the ONLY Primary and Elementary Physed Podcast in the world!
Joining me Under the Umbrella this week is PE development and technology specialist Naomi Hartl. As a teacher for 4 years, Naomi has now also teamed up with the Oregon SHAPE board of directors and is one of many influential cogs in the Physedagogy team!
During this episode, Naomi takes us on a journey, dropping some fantastic knowledge bombs along the way. From her PEinstitute16 highlights, finding the tipping point, top warm ups, other go to resources and reminiscing about her best Physed lesson EVER! Naomi was an absolute joy to have on the podcast and conducted the interview seamlessly, demonstrating her passion, creativity and experience in bucket loads!
What I Learned: Reaching the Tipping point – When the momentum for change becomes unstoppable… ‘Malcolm Gladwell ‘The Tipping Point’
Naomi shares an insightful, personal journey from her days teaching and feeling overwhelmed to the present day in which she is connected and supported by hundreds, if not thousands of like minded Physed practitioners who are all fighting for the same cause. This network on social media, over time, became Naomi’s tipping point towards a better place professionally.
My big take away from this is looking at the tipping point from the perspective of the children that I teach and had me wondering how I can help them reach their own tipping point as a class. The likelihood is, if you teach a class of 30 children, there will be some amongst them who don’t like Physed, for whom it makes them nervous, lack confidence and shy away from ‘fully’ engaging and taking part in the sessions. The question I asked myself was…
“How can I reach a tipping point whereby all children in my lessons have the confidence to engage and take part fully?”
The video below demonstrates perfectly how the tipping point works, as described by Naomi. If I can ‘win over’ even one of the disengaged or ‘lacking in confidence’ children in my class and work on creating a learning environment in which everybody is valued and supported, then I feel more and more will follow and the tipping point of creating a brilliant learning environment will be reached.
