“I can honestly say that I am now a better teacher on a more consistent basis, as I am fuelled by an insane passion and enthusiasm for what I do”
Hello to you, PE Umbrella community, and thank you for taking the time to join me for episode 35 of the PE Umbrella Podcast. The only podcast that is dedicated to ALL things Primary/Elementary Physical Education!
For this weeks episode, I reflect on a mass of thoughts that have gathered in my head during the past week through reading research articles, reading books and listening to podcasts. The underlying theme is of the importance of ENTHUSIASM as a key teacher trait and how I feel enjoying what you are doing is paramount for this. I weave together a couple of concepts that all begins with the quote:
‘A fish will forever think it’s stupid if it’s judged by its ability to climb a tree’
My big take away from this quote is how it highlights the ways in which so many people spend their lives trying to do something they can’t do that well or simply don’t enjoy, in a sense, always trying to improve on weaknesses instead of playing to their own strengths. Even as teachers, we are trained to spot weaknesses in everything that children do (their writing for example) and then tasked with providing feedback and steps on how to improve on those weaknesses. Seldom do we celebrate and give children the opportunity to pursue something they are very good at and most likely enjoy much much more. It makes no wonder that as adults, there is a sizeable percentage who are working on weaknesses in jobs they don’t particularly enjoy or may not be the best at, as opposed to doing something they truly love! It is from this love of what you do, that I believe true passion and enthusiasm really stems.
During this episode, I explore how I myself overcame the ‘living for the weekend’ mentality that so many of us, our family and our friends seem to adopt and how I now take ownership of my days. I explain how my career switch into pursuing something that I truly LOVE doing really fires me up on a daily basis and I argue the dangers of primary teachers delivering the entire national curriculum. After all, they can’t be passionate and truly love every single subject can they? Especially on a day to day basis!
Having listened to this weeks episode I want you to decide for yourself. Are you a fish trying to climb a tree? Or perhaps a fish that swims and follows its own dreams, one that oozes enthusiasm and passion for everything that they do?
