“We give them the tools, knowledge, habits and skills so they can live a life they are happy and excited about”
Welcome, Welcome, Welcome to The PE Umbrella Podcast, episode 56, and as always, thank you for giving up your time to join me on the ONLY Primary and Elementary Physed Podcast in the world! After some deep reflections last week, we are back on the interview train and welcome Bob Knipe, AKA Coach K to the show this week. Bob is an experienced elementary Physed practitioner and founder of the PEPEPtalk initiative that strives to support physed teachers across the globe by celebrating what they do, validating the importance and reassuring them of their worth and motivating them to continue making a difference.
During this bumper episode, we delve into some home truths about what it’s really like to teach physed, how we can provide our students with an Umbrella to protect them in their learning journey and how Bob ‘stokes the fire’ in his physed world on a weekly basis. All of this as well as our usual favourites including top class management tips, favourite warm up activity and best use of tech make for a killer, knowledge bomb filled episode you don’t want to miss.
What I Learned: If there is one thing I took out of this interview that sticks in my mind the most, it is the metaphor that Bob used, describing how as teachers, we create an Umbrella for our students to live under. A shield that can help guide and protect them by forming a barrier, a barrier made of knowledge and skill. We don’t have the means to protect them from everything that life will throw their way, but we can help them block out certain aspects by providing them with an ‘Umbrella’ of knowledge. This can be mental, physical or even emotional skills that they develop in our classroom and serve as the umbrella that helps guide them through an active and healthy life. [03:59]
