“…We now know that movement can assist us with the growth of new brain cells, we want our kids to know why they’re doing what they do”
Hello and welcome to another episode of The PE Umbrella Podcast, to the ONLY Primary and Elementary PE Podcast that you can tune in to on a weekly basis!
This week, for episode 37, I welcome outstanding PE and Health Education practitioner Andy Milne to the show. Originally from England, his education journey has seen him work across the globe before settling in the suburbs of Chicago. As well as teaching, Andy is a frequent presenter at regional and national events as well as a keen iBook writer, making the curriculum engaging and relevant for the children that he teaches. Of course, we talk about ALL things Primary PE, including best warm ups, top traits of an outstanding practitioner and his must read for the summer ahead!
It was a real honour speaking to Andy and his enthusiasm was truly infectious. As you listen you will hear his true passion for Physed and Health come to life as he articulates answers that truly hit home with all teachers. Being the first ‘Health Ed’ specialist on the show it was fascinating to hear what he teaches, why it is so important and whether or not we should be doing more of this in the UK. So come and join me ‘Under the Umbrella’ by clicking play right here, or subscribe to the PE Umbrella on iTunes to listen at your own leisure whenever you choose.
What I Learned: Learning needs to have a purpose! Whatever it is that you are doing, ensure that the children know how it will benefit them immediately, one week from now, one month from now and so on. How does it relate to their everyday life and where will it become applicable. In addition to this, make the learning relevant to THEM! iBook author is the perfect way to get stuck into making text books and projects that really hit home with the children that YOU teach. Take a look at this excellent one that Andy made himself on GOAL SETTING. This is certainly something I will pursuing!
