“Work with what you have got, I stuck some basketballs in a black bin bag and used it for the hammer throw”

Hello and Welcome to you, The PE Umbrella Community, to the ONLY Primary and Elementary PE Podcast!

Today, I chat with PE teacher Adam Llevo. Originally from from the North West of England, Adam currently works as a PE teacher and athletic director in Saudi Arabia.  In addition to this, he runs a successful blog and resource website at www.mradampe.com that is packed full of great content.  We delve into his vast experience to chat ALL things Primary PE including why we should be planning for the ‘small stuff’.

It was a pleasure chatting with Adam as he is a practitioner that I have followed on social platforms for some time now.  I admire his knowledge, enthusiasm and honesty during our interview, and I’m certain that YOU will be inspired and pick up some actionable tips from him, just as I did myself.  Check out the bottom of this page for links to ALL of the resources and links that we discuss in this episode! So what are you waiting for? Come and join me ‘Under the Umbrella’ by clicking play right here, or subscribe to the PE Umbrella on iTunes to listen at your own leisure whenever you choose.

What I Learned: Because of the constraints put on schools, it is often not possible to have the latest and best in terms of equipment, but it should be our duty as aspiring top practitioners to ‘make the best of what we have got’.  Adam himself used basketballs and bin liners to introduce a class to the hammer throw, enriching their experience of PE by providing them an opportunity that many other practitioners would have thought impossible.  Think outside the box and use what IS at your disposal.  There is often so much equipment in a Primary PE cupboard that is barely or even NEVER used.  If we don’t try to give our children as much variety as possible then are we doing them a disservice?  I think so.  I often wonder how much talent goes unnoticed and is taken to the grave in ‘less popular’ sports such as squash, badminton or even golf.  My top take away: Think outside the box and make the best of what you have got.

Ryan Ellis is to be commended for creating a special space where those of us in PE can come back to over and over again. The PE Umbrella is well-conceived and well executed... like a great PE lesson. The special sauce that makes the Umbrella unique is Ryan himself. Enthusiasm, knowledge, humility, humor, personality - Ryan is the right man for the right moment and all of us in the world of PE are better as a result. I find myself motivated and inspired as I actively engage with the content. Thanks Ryan!
