Welcome to The PE Umbrella Podcast episode 87, and thank you once again for giving up your time to join me on the ONLY Primary and Elementary Physed Podcast in the world!
In this episode, I reflect on the concept that ‘Pride’ is a bad thing, well too much of it anyway and how we help manage it in the students that we teach. I take you on a journey and tell tell you a story from my own childhood, where I feel pride and ego hindered me and were THE contributing factor behind my fixed mindset.
The stories I share are personal and have only ever been told to close family members before. They bring back memories that are hard for me to accept, but I feel now is the right time to share them, especially as a parent and teacher with the power to stop others falling into the same trap as myself. I use the concept of a flying kite as a metaphor for the pride and ego of our students. They themselves are the kite and the words positive praise we consistently give them serves as the wind that sends them higher and higher. Most crucially, we are the string that keeps them stable and focused on continually bettering themselves, striving for success. As without the string, any kite will fall from grace and come crashing down to Earth, just as I did growing up. All children need somebody to be the string keeping them steady and pointing in the right direction.
Today I share my crash and burn story and how it impacted my childhood and mindset even to this day.
How do you fly your class full of kites?
