“In every environment you will ever find yourself in, you have to work with people, you have to co-operate, you have to solve problems…”
The PE Umbrella Community, welcome once more to the ONLY Primary and Elementary PE Podcast in the world and thank you as always for giving up a small amount of your precious time to be here!
This week I am delighted to bring you episode 45 of the PE Umbrella podcast, in which I am joined Under the Umbrella by Physed teacher and lover of all things physical activity, Jo Bailey. I personally have been a big fan of Jo and the work she puts out online and over social media for some time now and have used ideas from her excellent blog in my own teaching. I made a point to watch her recent keynote presentation at PEInstitute16 about helping children ‘find their fun’ and ‘making it stick’, which as expected, was outstanding and filled with phenomenal advice and insights that had me questioning and reflecting on my own practice as well as thinking of ideas to take into the new school year. The PE Specialist Ben Landers has done a truly magnificent job of summarising all of the Key Note speeches from the conference HERE!
During this episode, we get stuck into Jo’s own PE Institute 16 highlights, how as a busy teacher and mum she finds her own fun, her favourite PE activities, top ‘class management’ tips and plenty of other Physed chatter!
What I Learned: As a Physed teacher, don’t worry about what others, in particular your children think! (I don’t mean say and act however you want) We are first and foremost, role models to all of the children we teach and as such should lead by example. Don’t be afraid to warm up with the children and absolutely don’t be afraid of making mistakes or looking like a ‘fool’ because you got something wrong. We are all the same and always learning! Show the children that you care about lifelong learning too. When Jo was teaching her class, her children queried why she was warming up, her response ‘If it’s good enough for you then it’s good enough for me’, if all else fails, it shows just how passionate you are about Physed and will rub off on your class.
