“The person who does the work, does the learning”
Hello and a HUGE welcome once more to you, The PE Umbrella Community, to the ONLY Primary and Elementary PE Podcast!
For episode 42, I am joined Under the Umbrella by Physical Education teacher, IPad enthusiast and Parkour advocate Daniel Zito. Currently teaching and residing in Melbourne, Australia, Daniel has been somebody that I have followed closely on social media for some time now and I was absolutely delighted to get to interview him for the podcast, and you will soon see why yourself. He regularly shares fantastic content and ideas online, much of which inspires me in my own practice and helps me to continue developing.
During this bumper episode, we talk about some amazing ideas including introducing Parkour to your class, #peexpressionsessions, and as usual, everything else Primary PE! So why not come and join us ‘Under the Umbrella’ by clicking play right here, or subscribe to the PE Umbrella on iTunes to listen at your own leisure whenever you choose.
What I Learned: This week, it was not a case so much of what I learned, but rather a framework to add clarity to something I already applied. I myself am a big advocate for IPad’s in the PE classroom, but only if it will add value and meaning to the lesson. During this episode, Daniel shared a framework titled ‘SAMR’ as a means to assess your usage of tech in your lessons and gauge just how much impact/benefit it has.
S – SUBSTITUTION – This may simply be substituting in a little bit of tech for something more basic or traditional in a session. As Daniel puts it, using a note taking app instead of pencil and paper to list skills required in football/soccer.
A – AUGMENTATION – Using a tool to add a little bit of value to a PE lesson. Instead of simply typing skills, the children may now be taking photos or videos of the skills.
M – MODIFICATION – Modify the lesson itself. The children at this stage may now record an instructional video of the skill.
R – REDEFINE – Completely redefine learning using tech! Not conceivable before tech was available. The children at this stage may even Skype children from somewhere else in the world and model the skills to them.
This tool is to be thought of as a ladder (S at the bottom and R at the top) and a means to look at ways of using these different levels in the lessons that you are planning.
