“Help them find meaning in physed, If it’s just us telling them to do it because ‘it’s good for you’… that meaning is gone.”
“You can’t teach kids until you have built a relationship with them”
Hello and a warm welcome to The PE Umbrella Podcast episode 51, and as always, thank you for giving up your time to join me on the ONLY Primary and Elementary Physed Podcast in the world! This episode starts our ascent towards a century of episodes and we certainly have a physed cracker for you!
This week Under the Umbrella, I am joined by Physed teacher, teacher trainer, author and fountain of physed knowledge Aaron Beighle. Many of you will recognise Aaron from the social media circles, particularly Twitter and he is also a key piece of the jigsaw on the superb ‘Fundamental Movement’ podcast. I previously interviewed another piece of the Fundamental Movement jigsaw ‘Nathan Horne’ back in episode 31 so head on over and check it out if you missed it.
During this amazing episode, Aaron takes us on a journey in which we discuss Physical Activity Levels, Specialist Physed Teachers, Motivation in Children, Class Management Strategies and Top Resources.
What I Learned: Building Relationships is KEY!
As teachers, we are in the relationships business and I think that sometimes we forget that. We are all too often caught up in the hectic day to day goings on in the world of teaching it is all too easy to forget to remain present and be a ‘people person’. If we form and build upon relationships with the children, colleagues and parents that we work with, our lives naturally become easier and in my opinion, more fulfilling.
‘You can’t teach kids until you have built a relationship with them’ – wise words indeed from Aaron. How often have you ignored the potential ‘negative’ behaviour of a child or dismissed it because you were so hell bent on finishing the awesome lesson you spent 3 hours planning.
Stay present, always.
We are all guilty of time travelling in life.
We spend so much time dwelling on the past, mulling over things we can no longer change.
We spend equally as much time worrying about the future and events that haven’t and probably won’t even happen.
Let’s start spending our mental energy and bandwidth on building quality relationships.
